reality tv

Reality Television or Not ?

Since I was young I would enjoy watching reality shows. I stopped watching them for a couple years being a teenage mom and my family growing so fast wouldn’t really give me time to watch television. When I would come home and after doing all my chores and attending my kids I would go to bed turn on the television and watch True Life, it was one of my favorites. I especially enjoy watching when the topic would be about obesity, food disorders, obsession with steroids ,depression. Those to me where especially interesting because it would help me understand what others would go through ,how difficult it is and to realize that it’s an illness. These shows taught and continue teaching me a lot .It helps you think that others out there go through this everyday , that to them it’s practically normal when it’s not. It takes away there health , time to be enjoying with friends ,family, enjoying the taste of food. To me these shows teach others that there are so many people that have these illnesses. What is even worse that all these illnesses some how relate to one another. It is all due to having low self esteems, having a hard time when growing up ,wanting to look good since now a days with today’s society being thin and fit and healthy is one of the top stories.
These shows in my opinion are very helpful. I don’t think it harms society , I think it benefits a lot of people out there. Sometimes we don’t take others peoples disorder, problems or illnesses into consideration. I myself being a mother of five and seeing how sometimes due to friends comments amongst each other they tend to make fun of peoples weight, or hygiene . My oldest two sons have come to me saying how they have friends that say they don’t want to eat because they’ll get fat , and its sad because us as parents are forgetting to educate them , teaching them that eating healthy and exercising will help you stay healthy and fit. When my son first approached me with these question I was concerned because so many young children have these problems. I allow my children to see these shows , it teaches them that there are so many young and grown up people that go through there daily lives starving themselves when they can be enjoying the taste of food. The ones that take steroids , how dangerous it is to take them , that in the long run all it does is get you addicted to them and even take away your life. The ones that go through depression how it takes away time from actually trying to enjoy the simple things in life ,like going outside to breath air . The ones that are made fun of due to obesity. That they cry out for help. I am very open to talking to my children about all this , they come to me when they have questions or concerns and it also helps them to talk to a friend that might be going through the same, telling them that there is help out there.

Past, Present, Future

My past ,present, and future
Hello my name is Martha , I’ve lived in Oxnard for 29 years. I have three brothers and three sisters .We are a very bonded family. I remember as growing up we were constantly moving until we were able to purchase our home. Growing up I played soccer and I can honestly say I am a soccer fanatic. My dad and uncles played soccer for many years for the Oxnard League winning many championships. I attended Channel Islands High School , graduated and started my family. I had to grow up fairly fast due to being a teenage mom . It was very hard having my baby and continuing with school but was and still am very proud of had graduated from high school with my class. Its truly a very challenging job to stay focused in school and have to also make sure my son was very well attended .
I am know a mother of five, four amazing boys and my beautiful daughter. I currently work in a medical clinic. As my spare time I like to go out for night jogs, exercising is one of my hobbies. I was married for fourteen years . I am now a single mother of five gorgeous kids , they are my inspiration . This is my first year here in Oxnard College , I am looking forward to obtaining my career as a registered nurse. My motivation are my kids , it is for them that after eleven years I made the decision of returning to school to reach my dream . I may also add that both of my sisters also motivated me to returning to school , they are both university graduates . I may also add that my two oldest sons play soccer , they are amazing soccer players. So my weekends are spent every Saturday and Sunday at the park watching there games and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world .
What do I see in my future , it’s a little hard to think of the future when you have to focus on your present. I see myself graduating from college , walking down the line with my nursing certificate. Along with me I see my children being very proud of me for reaching my dream. I can also see them all grown up hoping that some day they also go for there dream and never give up on them . My children are everything and I would do anything to see them happy , and this is why I want to reach my goal. I also see myself purchasing my very own house with a swimming pool of course and having our family get together’s. I see my son’s becoming professional soccer players of course, traveling with them all around the world being able to share those amazing moments with them. Perhaps take those family vacations I have so much dreamed of . I am looking forward to what my future brings. So classmates this is a little bit of me, and my advise is stick to your goal and never give up !

fast food

Growing Up With Fast Food

As a child I grew up with fast food being a treat for my brothers and sisters and I. My mom tells us that the first time we came to the United States; we stopped by at McDonalds and ate there. She says back then hamburgers were like 35 cents. So from there on my parents began a promise to us that if and when they can they’d treat us to McDonalds is we behaved, did our chores and most important behaved in mass. Since I can remember we would so often get that treat since being a family of eight. My parents would work very hard to provide for us and keep up with their promises to us. The family’s favorite was McDonalds. Later was when we started changing it to Burger King, Carl’s Jr. because at times they’d have deals, which was convenient for both my parents and having to buy for six. I remember I would always get the happy meal with a cheeseburger and fries and my toy, boy how I enjoyed those toys. I remember we would exchange them between my sisters and brothers. I remember that when they would give the Barbie’s my sisters and I would collect them and spend the day playing with them.  I would always look forward to our Sundays; mass we would talk amongst each other and say we’d behave so after we can go eat. I remember we’d pitch each other every time one of us slacked off, oh and my mother’s look would say it all when we were crossing the line of misbehaving. Fast Food was a biggie for my brothers, sisters and I, it was our treat.

I would probably have to say that McDonalds is still one of my favorites. I still eat fast food but limit myself. I’d say I have fast food once or twice a month. I try to eat healthy and stick to their salad menu but must admit it’s hard not to crave their hamburgers and fries and my favorite strawberry shakes. I would have to say that I’d rather cook and eat home meals plus being a mother of five does get quite expensive. I do treat my kids once in a while to a fast food of their choice but I use the same techniques as my parents did with us when we were young. They must do well in school, behave in mass, and do your chores. They dislike it but taught me how to keep clean and be responsible and that’s what I want my kids to learn. Now a day there’s so many health problems with eating all these fattening food. Like obesity which is one of the biggest health issues especially in children and is also why I limit these foods to my children. Children having diabetes, high blood pressure and it being so hard to change those eating habits. So fast food is really a problem health wise for the society overall.
